Search for Exempt Organizations courtesy of the IRS.  Here's the place to find out if your organization is exempt from federal taxation and how much of your contributions to them are tax deductible. This is an electronic version of the Publication 78 "Cumulative List of Organizations." The IRS website also includes a list of "charities" that are currently subject to Suspension of Exemption and Disallowance of Tax Deduction.

The American Institute of Philanthropy (AIP) announces its top-rated list of charities offering aid to the over one million displaced people. AIP, a leading charity watchdog that issues letter grade (A+ to F) ratings of nonprofit groups, identifies relief charities providing aid to the victims that receive an “A” or “B” grade based on the portion of their budget going to program services and their fundraising efficiency.

The Better Business Bureau Wise Giving Alliance
"The Alliance reports on nationally soliciting charitable organizations that are the subject of donor inquiries. These reports include an evaluation of the voluntary BBB charity standards. The BBB Wise Giving Alliance offers guidance to donors on making informed giving decisions through our charity evaluations, various "tips" publications, and publishes the quarterly
Better Business Bureau Wise Giving Guide."

The American Institute of Philanthropy "Helping you to give wisely to charity."  AIP offers ratings on organizations in its Charity Rating Guide. AIP considers a group's willingness to provide basic documents to serious donors as an important factor in one's giving decision. These documents include an annual report, complete audited financial statements, and Internal Revenue Service form 990, with Schedule A where applicable.

The U.S. Nonprofit Organization's Public Disclosure Regulations Site says, "A surprising number of nonprofit organization administrators don't realize that federal law requires most tax-exempt nonprofit organizations to allow public inspection of their recent federal annual information returns (e.g. IRS Form 990 and Form 990 Schedule A) and their application for tax-exempt status (e.g. IRS Form 1023 or 1024), along with nearly all associated material. Furthermore, the public access requirements have been significantly expanded, requiring that copies of these be provided upon request unless the organization makes these documents widely available. "Widely available" currently means publication of these documents on the World Wide Web in an acceptable format."  Additional information may be found at:
